On the Xbox One and Series X the Blu-ray drive is paired to the console — a unique key stored on the original drive's own controller board is matched to that specific motherboard, so a used drive from a different Xbox is rejected and will not read or eject discs. The proper fix is transferring the original drive's key to the replacement drive board (or repairing the original board), which is why we first check whether the fault is the laser, the belt and gears, or the drive board before ordering any part.
